Reno Public Market
About This Establishment
Back in the 1960s, this land was the last remaining section of the Casazza family’s ranch. It sat on the far outskirts of the city, and when the family announced they would be turning it into a retail center, people probably thought it was crazy. Reno didn’t have centers like that, and anyways, who would drive all the way out there? But the Casazzas had a vision of what this city would be, and what it would need.
In 1964, Shoppers Square opened its doors to the public. The center was anchored by big names like Skaggs Drugstore and Mayfair Market, but it also contained small local spots like Faye’s Sportswear, a dress shop owned by Faye herself, a woman who served high society clients in pre-Hitler Berlin. For decades, this was a heart of culture and commerce for Reno, and a regular stop for many as the city continued to grow.
Time changes all things, and over the decades, Shoppers Square was turned into an indoor mall. The neon sign above Faye’s was boarded up, and new tenants arrived. But through all the years, it was still owned and managed by the Casazza family. As the neighborhood grew and changed, so did its needs, and the Casazzas decided it was time to breathe new life into the space.
After years of planning, designing, re-designing, and building, Reno Public Market is something old and new all at once. In the bones of a structure that the city has grown around, you’ll find a vibrant community space full of local businesses. Order a plate, pull up a seat at the bar, and enjoy who’s on the stage ‘live at Faye’s’ – under the same neon sign that once illuminated the original center. Reno Public Market is proud of their history here and excited about the future.
