The life of Jesus “Chuy” Gutierrez offers a classic restaurant story, working his way up from dishwasher to casino chef to co-owner of Mari Chuy’s Mexican Kitchen, one in Midtown and one in Sparks. “I am very charismatic,” Chuy says, acknowledging his energetic hospitality, which is as much a signature of the restaurants as their guacamole spiked with jalapeños.
Potent margaritas made from a swath of tequilas are a signature, too, along with items like albondigas meatball soup, chicken in pasilla chile cream sauce, carnitas, carne asada and vegetarian jicama tacos. Taco Tuesdays? Burrito Thursdays? Chuy has those covered, too.
